Book cover

John Fletcher's play, Rule a Wife, and Have a Wife, is a captivating piece of literature that delves into complex themes of power dynamics, love, and female autonomy. As one of the ten works in the Beaumont & Fletcher collection, this play stands out for its thought-provoking and timeless storyline.

Set in late 16th-century Sicily, the play centers around a manipulative and cunning aristocrat named Leon, who aims to establish complete control over his wife, Estifania, and other women in his life. The plot unveils a thought-provoking exploration of gender roles and societal expectations, as well as the consequences of attempting to rule over another person's life.

Fletcher's dialogues showcase his prowess as a playwright, with a combination of wit, humor, and poetic language. The characters are beautifully crafted, each with their own strengths, flaws, and desires. Estifania, in particular, emerges as a strong-willed and resilient woman who refuses to submit to Leon's oppressive rule. Her fierce determination to assert her own independence sets the stage for a series of enthralling confrontations and plot twists.

Through Estifania's journey, the play portrays the complexities of love and marriage. It raises questions about the fine line between love and dominance, presenting a nuanced exploration of how power dynamics can impact relationships. The other female characters in the play also play significant roles, challenging societal norms and asserting their agency in different ways.

Fletcher's storytelling is skillful, weaving together drama, suspense, and even moments of comedy. The plot progresses at a steady pace, keeping readers engaged with its twists and turns. While the play does occasionally delve into melodrama, it is forgivable given the larger context and historical time period in which it was written.

One aspect that deserves special mention is Fletcher's exploration of gender roles and the treatment of women in society. By highlighting the struggles faced by Estifania and other female characters, the play serves as a critique of the patriarchal norms prevalent at the time. This theme resonates even in modern times, making the play relevant and thought-provoking for contemporary audiences.

Overall, Rule a Wife, and Have a Wife stands as a testament to John Fletcher's talent as a playwright, showcasing his ability to create complex characters and weave captivating narratives. With its exploration of power dynamics, gender roles, and the pursuit of autonomy, this play remains a timeless piece of literature that continues to resonate with readers of all eras.
