Der var igrunden altfor meget lys. Paa en skyfri junihimmel stod en blankpoleret sol og sendte digre straalebundter ned over byen og havnen, over fjorden og fjeldene rundt om.

Rundt Vaagen laa husrækkerne og formelig æste varme ut af træværk og murer. Luften var tyk av fiskestank og alskens ubehagelige dunster, for end ikke det mindste vindpust bragte svalning eller frisk luft.
