Secret Power or the Secret of Success in Christian Life and Work   By: (1837-1899)

Book cover

In "Secret Power or the Secret of Success in Christian Life and Work," Dwight Lyman Moody explores the profound concept of tapping into a hidden source of strength. While the title may sound elusive, the content is, in fact, easily accessible and applicable to individuals seeking spiritual growth.

Moody's writing style is straightforward and engaging, making it accessible to readers from various backgrounds. The book is divided into succinct chapters, each focusing on different aspects of the secret power Moody emphasizes – the power of the Holy Spirit. Throughout, the author substantiates his teachings by citing relevant Bible verses, offering a solid scriptural foundation for readers to reflect upon.

One of the notable strengths of "Secret Power" is how Moody emphasizes the importance of the Holy Spirit's role in every believer's life. He delves into the transformational power of the Spirit, urging readers to cultivate an intimate relationship with Him. Moody's anecdotes and personal examples add depth and relatability to the concepts he presents, allowing readers to grasp the practical implications of this power in their own lives.

Another strength lies in Moody's focus on the significance of prayer. He emphasizes the role of prayer as a means of communication with God, encouraging readers to be diligent in seeking His guidance and wisdom. The book highlights the importance of aligning one's desires with God's purposes, ultimately leading to a more fulfilling and successful Christian life.

However, one potential weakness of the book is its brevity. While the concise nature of each chapter is appealing, it sometimes leaves readers wanting more in terms of practical advice and detailed examples. Additionally, some may find Moody's writing style overly simplistic, yearning for a more nuanced exploration of the subject matter.

Overall, "Secret Power or the Secret of Success in Christian Life and Work" by Dwight Lyman Moody presents an accessible and thought-provoking exploration of a transformative concept. Moody's emphasis on the power of the Holy Spirit and the importance of prayer provide valuable insights for individuals seeking a deeper connection with God. Although the book could benefit from more elaboration, it serves as an inspiring resource for those desiring spiritual growth and a closer relationship with their faith.

PREFACE.

One man may have "zeal without knowledge," while another may have knowledge without zeal. If I could have only the one, I believe I should choose the first; but, with an open Bible, no one need be without knowledge of God's will and purpose; and the object of this book is to help others to know the source of true power, that both their zeal and their knowledge may be of increased service in the Master's work.

Paul says, "all Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable;" but I believe one portion, and that the subject of this book, has been too much overlooked, as though it were not practical, and the result is lack of power in testimony and work. If we would work, "not as one that beateth the air," but to some definite purpose, we must have this power from on high. Without this power, our work will be drudgery. With it, it becomes a joyful task, a refreshing service.

May God make this book a blessing to many. This is my prayer.

CHAPTER I.

POWER ITS SOURCE

In vain do the inhabitants of London go to their conduits for supply unless the man who has the master key turns the water on; and in vain do we think to quench our thirst at ordinances, unless God communicates the living water of His Spirit... Continue reading book >>
