Era una mattina piovosa di febbraio, e mancava un'ora al levar del sole. Mia madre m'accompagnò fin sul pianerottolo, ripetendomi in fretta tutti i consigli che mi soleva dare da un mese; poi mi gettò le braccia al collo, diede in uno scoppio di pianto, e disparve. Io rimasi un momento là col cuore stretto, guardando la porta quasi sul punto di gridare: Apri! Non parto più! Resto con te! poi mi cacciai giù per le scale, come un ladro inseguito. Quando fui nella strada, mi parve che tra me e casa mia si fossero già stese le onde del mare, e alzate le cime dei Pirenei; ma benchè da tanto tempo aspettassi quel giorno con impazienza febbrile, non ero punto allegro. Incontrai alla svoltata d'una strada un medico mio amico che andava all'ospedale, e ch'io non aveva visto da più d'un mese; mi domandò: "Dove vai?" "In Spagna," risposi.
