Book cover

The Standard Household-Effect Company is a compelling novel written by esteemed author William Dean Howells. Set against the backdrop of late 19th-century America, this insightful work of literature delves into the intricate lives and relationships of the middle-class citizens, showcasing their triumphs, struggles, and ambitions.

Throughout the book, Howells skillfully weaves together various storylines, each representing a subtly different facet of American society during that era. The central plot revolves around the titular company, which specializes in selling a wide range of household items to customers across the nation. However, beneath the surface, the company symbolizes much more than just its products. It reflects the changing values and aspirations of the people it serves, highlighting the evolving nature of the American dream.

One of the notable aspects of this novel is Howells' masterful character development. He brings to life a diverse cast, each with their own distinct personalities and motivations, allowing readers to deeply empathize with their experiences. From the ambitious and hardworking company owner to the disillusioned employees facing the harsh realities of life, every character is well-rounded and becomes an engaging presence in their own right.

Moreover, Howells excels at capturing the societal dynamics of the time. He expertly explores the tensions between the privileged upper class and the struggling middle class, shedding light on the stark disparities in wealth and social standing. The themes of materialism, idealism, and the pursuit of happiness are skillfully interwoven into the narrative, giving readers a profound understanding of the complexities of life in that period.

The prose employed in The Standard Household-Effect Company is rich and evocative. Howells' writing style is graceful, yet unpretentious, allowing the story to flow seamlessly without overwhelming the reader. The attention to detail in the descriptions of settings and objects not only enhances the vividness of the story but also provides a fascinating glimpse into the material culture of the time.

However, despite its many virtues, the pacing of the novel can occasionally feel slow, particularly during certain sections where the plot meanders. Some readers may find themselves longing for a more concise and faster-paced narrative. Nevertheless, this minor flaw does not detract from the overall impact and value of the book.

In conclusion, The Standard Household-Effect Company is a captivating novel that offers readers a thought-provoking exploration of the complexities of American society in the late 19th century. With its richly developed characters, vivid descriptions, and insightful societal commentary, this book is a testament to William Dean Howells' literary prowess. It is a must-read for those interested in historical fiction and a valuable addition to any bookshelf.

I.

"Isn't the eternal womanly everywhere? What has happened to you?" I asked.

"I wish you would come to my house and see. Every rug has been up for a month, and we have been living on bare floors. Everything that could be tied up has been tied up, everything that could be sewed up has been sewed up. Everything that could be moth balled and put away in chests has been moth balled and put away. Everything that could be taken down has been taken down. Bags with draw strings at their necks have been pulled over the chandeliers and tied. The pictures have been hidden in cheese cloth, and the mirrors veiled in gauze so that I cannot see my own miserable face anywhere."

"Come! That's something."

"Yes, it's something. But I have been thinking this matter over very seriously, and I believe it is going from bad to worse. I have heard praises of the thorough housekeeping of our grandmothers, but the housekeeping of their granddaughters is a thousand times more intense... Continue reading book >>
