Eine Frühlingsnacht endete, und das neue Tagewerk begann. Droben im sehr geräumigen Erker ließ sich der alte Herr in seinen Stuhl helfen. Er lag jetzt die Nächte oft wachend und verzehrte sich voll Ungeduld, bis zwischen den Spalten der Vorhänge ein grauer Schein bemerkbar wurde. Diesen grauen Schein der Morgendämmerung nannte er schon »Tag«, und damit gestand er sich das Recht zu, seinen Dienern zu klingeln. Denn sein treuer Leupold konnte den mächtigen Körper nicht mehr allein regieren; ein zweiter Diener hatte angenommen werden müssen. Und so zwang sich der alte Herr mit ingrimmiger Selbstbeherrschung, noch ein neues Gesicht in seiner Nähe zu ertragen.

Stöhnend und durch das vergebliche Bemühen, selbsttätig sich zu bewegen, seinen Helfern die Handhabungen noch erschwerend, kam er in die rechte Lage.
