A Study of Shakespeare   By: (1837-1909)

Book cover

Algernon Charles Swinburne's A Study of Shakespeare is a thought-provoking exploration of one of the greatest literary geniuses of all time. While the book lacks a cohesive narrative structure, it compensates with an abundance of insightful analysis, poetic language, and a deep-seated passion for the subject matter.

From the very first page, it is evident that Swinburne approaches Shakespeare's works with an almost reverential admiration. His extensive knowledge of the Bard's plays, sonnets, and other literary accomplishments lends credibility to his interpretations, as he effortlessly navigates through the complex themes, characters, and language that define Shakespearean literature. It becomes clear that Swinburne's objective is to unveil Shakespeare's brilliance not only as a playwright but also as a poet, philosopher, and keen observer of human nature.

One of the book's strongest aspects is Swinburne's ability to seamlessly intertwine his own poetic voice with his analysis of Shakespeare's work. The beauty of his prose and the eloquence of his expressions add flair and vivacity to each chapter, making for an engaging read even for those less familiar with the intricacies of Shakespearean writings. Swinburne's deep understanding of the linguistic nuances and historical context surrounding Shakespeare's plays enriches his interpretations, rendering them credible and enlightening.

Nevertheless, the book's lack of a clear organization, combined with Swinburne's tendency to meander off-topic, may prove challenging for some readers. The absence of a structured framework may leave one feeling disjointed, as the content jumps from one topic to another seemingly at random. Consequently, the book's flow and coherence suffer, which can be both frustrating and disorienting for those hoping for a more linear exploration of Shakespeare's oeuvre.

Moreover, the book's language, while undoubtedly elegant, occasionally borders on the excessive. Swinburne's elaborate descriptions and dense rhetorical devices may alienate some readers seeking a more straightforward analysis. These stylistic choices can sometimes overshadow the content itself, making it difficult to fully grasp the core arguments or appreciate the subtle nuances of Swinburne's interpretations.

Overall, A Study of Shakespeare is an intriguing and beautifully written exploration of Shakespeare's unparalleled literary legacy. Algernon Charles Swinburne's passion and expertise shine through his evocative prose, elevating the book beyond a mere scholarly endeavor. While the lack of clear organization and occasional excesses in language may hinder accessibility for some readers, those who can embrace Swinburne's poetic sensibilities will find themselves thoroughly engrossed in a remarkable journey through the timeless works of the Bard himself.

A STUDY OF SHAKESPEARE BY ALGERNON CHARLES SWINBURNE.

PREFACE TO THIS EDITION

Begun in the winter of 1874, a first instalment of "A Study of Shakespeare" appeared in the Fortnightly Review for May 1875, and a second in the number for June 1876, but the completed work was not issued in book form until June 1880. In a letter to me (January 31, 1875), Swinburne said:

"I am now at work on my long designed essay or study on the metrical progress or development of Shakespeare, as traceable by ear and not by finger, and the general changes of tone and stages of mind expressed or involved in this change or progress of style."

The book was produced at the moment when controversy with regard to the internal evidence of composition in the writings attributed to Shakespeare was raging high, and the amusing appendices were added at the last moment that they might infuriate the pedants of the New Shakespeare Society. They amply fulfilled that amiable purpose.
