Book cover

They Twinkled Like Jewels by Philip José Farmer is a mesmerizing and thought-provoking work of science fiction. The novel takes readers on a captivating journey through multiple dimensions, exploring the complex concept of identity and self-discovery.

Set in a distant future, the story follows protagonist Willia "Bill" Iris as he navigates through a series of parallel universes. Each world is intricately constructed, with its own set of rules and peculiarities. Farmer's ability to create vivid and detailed settings is truly commendable, immersing readers in a vivid array of unique and imaginative landscapes.

What truly sets this novel apart is how it delves deeply into intricate philosophical questions. Through his exploration of multiple universes, Farmer challenges the conventional notions of self and reality. The concept of identity is cleverly tackled, as the protagonist encounters versions of himself in each parallel universe, prompting him to question who he truly is and what defines him.

The character development in They Twinkled Like Jewels is also exceptional. Bill Iris is a relatable and multi-dimensional character, constantly evolving and adapting as he traverses the different dimensions. His inner struggles and doubts make him endearing, and readers will find themselves rooting for his self-discovery journey.

Furthermore, the writing style is smooth and engaging, allowing the narrative to flow effortlessly. The author's descriptive prose brings the various settings to life, immersing readers in each distinct universe. Farmer masterfully combines scientific concepts with philosophical musings, creating a narrative that is intellectually stimulating yet still accessible.

Another aspect that adds depth to the story is the social commentary subtly woven into the plot. Farmer cleverly addresses issues like cultural relativism, the exploitation of natural resources, and the impact of technology on society. These themes offer much food for thought, elevating the novel beyond a simple adventure story.

Despite its many strengths, They Twinkled Like Jewels may not suit every reader's taste. The intricate narrative and complex ideas may require some patience and concentration to fully appreciate. Additionally, while the ending provides closure, some readers may find it somewhat open-ended and yearn for more resolution.

In conclusion, They Twinkled Like Jewels is a captivating and intelligently crafted sci-fi novel that challenges our perceptions of reality, identity, and the nature of existence. Philip José Farmer's ability to merge scientific concepts with profound philosophical inquiries is truly remarkable. This book is a must-read for fans of mind-bending science fiction and those who enjoy delving into existential themes.

Its title was "The Lovers" and since then he has gone right on proving himself a top hand craftsman.

Crane didn't get the nice man's name until it was far too late to do anything at all about it.

Jack Crane lay all morning in the vacant lot. Now and then he moved a little to quiet the protest of cramped muscles and stagnant blood, but most of the time he was as motionless as the heap of rags he resembled. Not once did he hear or see a Bohas agent, or, for that matter, anyone. The predawn darkness had hidden his panting flight from the transie jungle, his dodging across backyards while whistles shrilled and voices shouted, and his crawling on hands and knees down an alley into the high grass and bushes which fringed a hidden garden.

For a while his heart had knocked so loudly that he had been sure he would not be able to hear his pursuers if they did get close. It seemed inevitable that they would track him down. A buddy had told him that a new camp had just been built at a place only three hours drive away from the town... Continue reading book >>
