Nuori lukijani! Varmaankin olet kuullut puhuttavan neekereistä Pohjois Amerikan Yhdysvalloissa. Neekerit ovat, kuten tiedät, kotoisin Afrikasta, mutta kun Amerikassa tarvittiin työvoimia, tuotiin heitä sinne joukottain suurilla laivoilla. Mutta, sanonet, miksi eivät amerikalaiset itse tehneet työtään? He eivät kestäneet kuumaa ilmanalaa, eikä heitä muutenkaan ollut kyllin. Varsinkin oli Yhdysvaltain etelä osassa n. k. Etelävaltioissa suuri työväenpuute, siellä kun oli laajat riisi , sokeri ja puuvillaviljelykset. Ja siksi neekerit paraasta päästä sijoitettiinkin sinne.

Työ ei suinkaan ole mitään pahaa. Kotona näet isäsi ja äitisi tekevän työtä aamusta iltaan ja kun kasvat isoksi, rupeat sinä myöskin harjoittamaan jotakin tointa. Työllä me ansaitsemme ruokamme ja vaatteemme, työmme hedelmillä voimme auttaa ihmisiä, jotka ovat hädässä ja puutteessa. Mutta neekereistä ei tehtykään tällaisia työmiehiä.
