Después de las infinitas sandeces y extravagancias con que los del vecino imperio acostumbran á pasar ratos tan frecuentes de buen humor á costa de nuestro país, apenas se concibe que no haya habido algun escritor español que dijera de ellos tantas verdades, cuantas son las mentiras que ellos han dicho de nosotros.

Lo más que han hecho ciertos celosos escritores nacionales, ha sido vindicarnos de aquellas ingeniosas imposturas, de aquellos novelescos despropósitos, como quien repele una invasión extraña; pero ninguno (que sepamos) ha hecho una expedición á sus tierras, con ánimo deliberado de ver y de decir lo que por allí pasa, porque algo que merezca la pena de verse y de decirse debe pasar.
