Kulkiessa N:n avaraa ulappata, erään lahden rannalla vetää huomiota puoleensa komeasti rakennettu talo. Sen etäälle ulottuneet, laajat vainiot ovat silmään pistävät, sillä niissä huomaat paljon työn ja toimen jälkiä. Talo itse on rakennettu nykyajan sivistyksen ja vaatimusten mukaan rikkaalta näyttäväksi: kaksi punaiseksi maalattua asuinhuone riviä rajoittaa komeata pihaa, jota vielä kaunistaa vuosia takaperin istutetut, tuuheat pihlajapuut, joita katsellessa näet, ett'ei talon asujamilta ole puuttunut kauneuden aistiakaan. Toisen asuinrakennuksen seinustalla on soma kukkamaa. Siinä viihtyy silmäsi hetken, sillä sitä katsellessasi huomaat helläin kätten työtä, huomaatpa vielä kukkia akkunoillakin, joita suojelee kotikutoiset varjostimet liialta auringon paisteelta.

Antti Niemeläinen, joksi tämän talon isäntää nimitetään (talo on Niemelä), on 60 vuotias ukko. Hiuksensa ovat jo aikaa vaalistuneet, ja muutenkin jäykät jäntereensä ovat kangistuneet paljosta työstä, sillä Niemeläinen ei ollut niitä, jotka vain ovat käskijänä, vaan hän on tahtonut itse näyttää, kuinka ahkera työmies vastuksetkin voittaa, vaikka usein saikin kokea pohjolan hallaöitten kovuutta, mutta sitä uutterampi ja säästäväisempi oli ukko...
