Morgen zullen wij uit Batavia vertrekken. Ik heb bijna den geheelen dag in de stad rondgeloopen, want ik wil het beeld van deze plaats diep in mijn geheugen prenten. Later zal ik onder den donkeren europeeschen hemel in den winter 't schitterend vizioen oproepen; dan zal ik de wandeling van vandaag nog eens overdoen en in de gesloten huiskamer, beschut voor den scherpen wind en den ijskouden regen, zal ik het indolente leven van dit schoone land opnieuw genieten.

Ik kom zoo juist na het gewone zware middag maal uit het hôtel. De straten zijn ledig. De copieuse rijsttafel maakt de Europeanen suf; ieder gaat slapen of rusten in de ruime slaapkamers met een minimum van kleeding. De Maleiers zelf zoeken ook de schaduw en spelen of babbelen, neergehurkt aan den voet der boomen of op de steenen der verlaten galerijen. Een dos à dos, het ongemakkelijke, javaansche rijtuigje, voert mij zachtjes aan door de lanen. Hier is het Koningsplein; de groote grasvlakte breidt haar groen tapijt uit tot aan de lijn van mooie boomen vóór en rondom het Museum.
