Centraal Azië trekt in onze dagen de aandacht van allen, die niet alleen belang stellen in hetgeen in hunne onmiddellijke nabijheid gebeurt, maar ook in wat daar geschiedt en zich voorbereidt in gindsche verwijderde landstreken, vanwaar reeds meer dan eenmaal eene beslissende omwenteling in de wereldhistorie is uitgegaan. De uitbreiding der russische heerschappij in deze onmetelijke, zoo weinig bekende landen van Midden Azië is een feit van zeer groote beteekenis, waarvan de gevolgen zich eerst langzamerhand, wellicht eerst na betrekkelijk langen tijd, in hun vollen omvang zullen openbaren. Wat hier ook van zij: in ieder geval worden deze streken, reeds door historische herinneringen en eigenaardigheid van volksleven en ontwikkeling veelszins merkwaardig, tengevolge harer inlijving in het groote russische rijk, ook onzer europeesche wereld nader gebracht. Onze lezers zullen dan ook zeker met belangstelling kennisnemen van het boeiende reisverhaal van een Rus, Basilius Wereschagin, met wien wij reeds vroeger kennis maakten.
