Il y a quelques semaines (avril 1840), j'avais laissé tomber négligemment cette phrase: «J'irais volontiers en Espagne!» Au bout de cinq ou six jours, mes amis avaient ôté le prudent conditionnel dont j'avais mitigé mon désir et répétaient à qui voulait l'entendre que j'allais faire un voyage en Espagne. À cette formule positive succéda l'interrogation: «Quand partez vous?» Je répondis, sans savoir à quoi je m'engageais: «Dans huit jours.» Les huit jours passés, les gens manifestaient un étonnement de me voir encore à Paris. «Je vous croyais à Madrid, disait l'un.
