Conquest of Bread (version 2)

Book cover
By: (1842-1921)

In "Conquest of Bread" version 2, Peter Kropotkin presents a compelling argument for the necessity of a society built on mutual aid and cooperation, rather than competition and greed. Kropotkin's ideas around the need for the equitable distribution of resources and the elimination of capitalism are as relevant today as they were when the book was first published.

One of the strengths of Kropotkin's work is his ability to provide concrete examples of how a society based on mutual aid could function. He outlines specific ways in which resources could be shared more equitably and highlights the benefits that come from a society where everyone's needs are met.

Kropotkin also does a great job of addressing potential criticisms of his ideas, such as concerns about a lack of incentive for individuals to work. He argues that in a society based on cooperation, people would be motivated to work for the collective good rather than personal gain.

Overall, "Conquest of Bread" version 2 is a thought-provoking and persuasive critique of capitalism and a compelling vision for a more just and equitable society. It is a must-read for anyone interested in political theory and the possibility of creating a better world for all.

Book Description:
In this work, Kropotkin points out what he considers to be the defects of the economic systems of feudalism and capitalism, and how he believes they thrive on and maintain poverty and scarcity, as symbol for richness and in spite of being in a time of abundance thanks to technology, while promoting privilege. He goes on to propose a more decentralised economic system based on mutual aid and voluntary cooperation, asserting that the tendencies for this kind of organisation already exist, both in evolution and in human society. He also talks about details of revolution and expropriation in order not to end in a reactionary way.
