On a Cattle Track

Book cover
By: (1839-1882)

On a Cattle Track by Henry Kendall is a beautifully written novel that captures the harsh realities of life on the Australian frontier. The author's vivid descriptions paint a picture of the rugged landscape and the challenges faced by the characters as they navigate through a harsh and unforgiving environment.

The protagonist, a young cattle drover named Ben Warreen, is a compelling character who is forced to confront his own limitations and fears as he embarks on a treacherous journey across the wilderness. Along the way, he encounters a variety of colorful characters, each with their own struggles and motivations.

Kendall's prose is lyrical and evocative, bringing to life the sights, sounds, and smells of the outback. The novel is a poignant exploration of resilience, friendship, and the bond between man and nature.

Overall, On a Cattle Track is a gripping and atmospheric read that will transport readers to a time and place that feels both distant and familiar. Kendall's storytelling is both poignant and powerful, making this a book that will linger in the reader's mind long after the final page is turned.

Book Description:
Henry Kendall was the first Australian poet to draw his inspiration from the life, scenery and traditions of the country. In the beginnings of Australian poetry the names of two other men stand with his—Adam Lindsay Gordon, of English parentage and education, and Charles Harpur, born in Australia a generation earlier than Kendall. Harpur's work, though lacking vitality, shows fitful gleams of poetic fire suggestive of greater achievement had the circumstances of his life been more favourable. Kendall, whose lot was scarcely more fortunate, is a true singer; his songs remain, and are likely long to remain, attractive to poetry lovers. - Summary by from the Biographical Note of Poems of Henry Kendall
