Book Description:
Irritated and drunken, an itinerant farm-worker sells his wife and child to a stranger. Thus begins The Mayor of Casterbridge, set in rural and small-town England in the mid-1800s. In the original subtitle, Hardy called this the story of "a man of character," and the central character, Michael Henchard, is one of English fiction's greatest creations. Henchard is deeply developed as a realistic character, but also larger-than-life in the manner of a Greek or Shakespearean tragic hero — huge in his determination and huge in his failings. The novel deals with the struggles between individual will, the hold of the past, and the relentless control of circumstances in a changing society. (Summary by Bruce Pirie)

Good story and good Reader by Bruce Pirie. Thomas Hardy described a character of a man (the old Mayor) who could not accept his lost/failure, he always fought between his bad and good intensions, but the bad ones that won most of the time. A lot of twists and turns There was love triangle in between. Sadly the old Mayor died alone.. triangle in between. Sadly the old Mayor died alone at the end.

Thanks to the provider and the good Reader (Bruce Pirie). Good story.Such Mayor's character exists in our modern society. Man who could not accept his lost and envied the other who was sucessful. He struglled between his bad and good thoughts, but the bad ones that always won. He could be a good man if he wanted to. Something good happened to him but it was taken away due to his mistake. Sadly at the end he felt unwanted, outcasted and disrepectfull and died alone. Dramatic ending.
