The Swiss Family Robinson

The Swiss Family Robinson by Johann David Wyss
By: (1743-1818)

A beautiful story about survival, the Robinson family shows that one does not have to have the usual comforts of life in order to be comfortable and happy.

It is also a story about family relations. The book showcases a family of six that has to start all over without the basic amenities that make life easier in the eyes of society. The idea of being in an island with no human neighbors is daunting to say the least.

The family was shipwrecked and everyone else on the ship perished when they deserted the ship. When the storm finally abated, they figured out a way to shore and immediately tackled the most urgent needs like food and shelter for the night.

The senior Robinson and Franz, the eldest son, explored the island and found that it was well endowed with food and animals that could be killed for meat. On further exploration, they discovered better shelter and even a salt supply. They had supplies and even wax from which they made candles. They made many more amazing discoveries and got quite comfortable on the island which was hither to uninhabited.

Later, they found an English girl, Jenny, who had been stranded on a different island for three years. But how did she get there and survive so long? This book tells an endearing survival story and highlights the joys of close family bonds.A beautiful story about survival, the Robinson family shows that one does not have to have the usual comforts of life in order to be comfortable and happy.

Fantastic Family Book! This book is written very well and easy to follow. There was no racism, just observations of the native people, and with the characteristic of wording due to century it was written. Very well narrated! This is a family book for sure. The book gives some life lessons, morals, kindness, and of things we take for granted. The book is not as preachy as some from it's time. Great book for young boys and girls- should be read in school! I wish I had read this a long time ago!

This reading by Mark Smith is one of the very best I have heard anywhere. He brings each character to life and draws the listener deep into the story. He is a top notch storyteller and I look forward to other readings by him. Kudos!

Subject: To much killing
I heartily agree with the reviewer that that was talking about how the Robinson's kill everything in sight. I'm especially freaked out that the father bites a donkeys ear until it bleeds.

I absolutely loved this story, having never heard it before. The reader is absolutely brilliant. I have listened to it about five times now. Every time I realised I missed something before. It really made me think, about how lucky we are and spoilt in the western world. I have never had to hunt for my food or even light a fire. I wish we could search by reader as this man was brilliant in my opinion. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

If you're an animal on an island, and the Robinson family happens to come around - GET OUT! Is there any poor creature than this family won't kill, enslave, and/or eat??? Often they do it for no particular reason at all. All that being said, the reader did a wonderful job. And, it was nice to finally hear this story, never having read the book or seen the movies.

Subject: Well narrated
As this was my first audiobook it took me a while to get used to the idea of someone else reading to me. For the first chapter it felt a bit jarring and then as I got used to it, I forgot about the accent, pronunciation and mannerisms of narrator and was able to fully enjoy the book.

The racism was unpleasant, and the kids acted dumb, it was like being in church a lot of the time, but I do like a unique survival story. Good concept, icky exaction. Well narrated.

One of my favourite books when I was a child. I remember why now. Well read, in some of the books on here the reader is a distraction. Not so with this one

I enjoyed the reader of this book. This was a long book that was very detailed in everything that went on. If you like science, and botany then you will enjoy it. This story is nothing like all the movies from Hollywood, but more of a journal of their lives.

The text file ebook seems be a slightly different version than what is read but the HTML and eReader versions match perfectly.
