Twelfth Night (version 3)

Book cover
By: (1564-1616)

Twelfth Night by William Shakespeare is a delightful comedy filled with mistaken identities, unrequited love, and humorous misunderstandings. The play follows Viola, who disguises herself as a man named Cesario after being shipwrecked on the coast of Illyria. As Cesario, Viola serves Duke Orsino and quickly becomes entangled in a love triangle when Orsino sends her to woo the countess Olivia on his behalf.

The characters in Twelfth Night are vibrant and multifaceted, with each contributing to the madcap comedy that unfolds. Viola is a strong and resourceful protagonist, while Olivia is a complex and emotionally conflicted noblewoman. The supporting cast, including the drunken Sir Toby Belch and the foolish Sir Andrew Aguecheek, provide plenty of comic relief.

Shakespeare's language is as sharp and witty as ever, with memorable lines and clever wordplay sprinkled throughout the play. The themes of gender, love, and identity are explored with depth and nuance, making Twelfth Night a timeless and enduring work of literature.

Overall, Twelfth Night is a delightful and entertaining play that showcases Shakespeare's talent for comedy and storytelling. Its rich characters, witty dialogue, and madcap plot make it a joy to read or watch performed on stage.

Book Description:
Twelfth Night, or What You Wil is a comedy by William Shakespeare, believed to have been written around 1601–02 as a Twelfth Night's entertainment for the close of the Christmas season. The play centres on the twins Viola and Sebastian, who are separated in a shipwreck. Viola falls in love with Duke Orsino, who in turn is in love with the Countess Olivia. Upon meeting Viola, Countess Olivia falls in love with her thinking she is a man. The play expanded on the musical interludes and riotous disorder expected of the occasion, with plot elements drawn from the short story "Of Apollonius and Silla" by Barnabe Rich, based on a story by Matteo Bandello. The first recorded performance was on 2 February 1602, at Candlemas, the formal end of Christmastide in the year's calendar. The play was not published until its inclusion in the 1623 First Folio. - Summary by Wikipedia
