This collection was a joint effort by the chaplains of the US Army and the Navy to meet the needs of divine services conducted in the Army and Navy, and for, in the compilers' words, "the upbuilding of patriotic citizenship." These 20 hymns from the book were selected by the singers.

William Griffith Thomas was a pastor, teacher and co-founder of the Dallas Theological Seminary. This book contains nine devotional commentaries on prayers from Paul's letters to the churches at Thessalonica, Colossi and Ephesus. Thomas is theologically conservative. John Wesley, along with his brother Charles, are credited with founding the Methodist denomination.
