　　杜如晦，少聰悟，精彩絕人。太宗引為秦府兵曹，俄改陝州長史。房玄齡聞於太宗曰：「餘人不足惜，杜如晦聰明識達，王佐之才。若大王守藩，無所用之，必欲經營四方，非此人不可。」太宗乃請為秦府掾，封建平縣男，補文學館學士。令文學楮亮為之贊曰：「建平文雅，休有烈光，懷忠履義，身立名揚。」貞觀初，為右僕射，玄齡為左僕射。太宗謂之曰：「公為僕射，當須大開耳目，求訪賢哲，此乃宰相之弘益。比聞聽受詞訴，日不暇給，安能為朕求賢哉！」自是，臺閣規模，皆二人所定。其法令意在寬平，不以求備取人，不以己長格物。如晦、玄齡引進之，如不及也。太宗每與玄齡圖事，則曰：「非如晦莫能籌之。」及如晦至，卒用玄齡之策。二人相須，以斷大事。迄今言良相者，稱房杜焉。及如晦薨，太宗謂虞世南曰：「吾與如晦，君臣義重。不幸物化，實痛於懷。卿體吾意，為製碑也。」後太宗嘗新瓜美，愴然悼之，輟其半，使置之靈座。及賜玄齡黃銀帶，因謂之曰：「如晦與公，同心輔朕，今日所賜，惟獨見公。」泫然流涕。以黃銀帶辟惡，為鬼神所畏，�...
