Book cover
By: (1768-1849)

Absentee by Maria Edgeworth is a thought-provoking novel that sheds light on the consequences of neglecting one's responsibilities. Set in early 19th century Ireland, the story follows the wealthy Lord and Lady Clonbrony, who spend most of their time in London while their estate in Ireland falls into disrepair.

The novel explores themes of duty, family loyalty, and the impact of the absentee landlord system on the Irish people. Through the character of Lord Clonbrony, Edgeworth portrays the folly and selfishness of those who prioritize their own comfort and social standing over their obligations to their community.

The writing style is engaging and the characters are well-developed, making it easy for readers to become invested in the story. While some may find the pacing slow at times, the overall message of the novel is powerful and relevant even today.

Overall, Absentee is a compelling read that serves as a reminder of the importance of being present and actively involved in the lives of those around us. It is a timeless tale that continues to resonate with readers long after they have finished the final page.

Published in 1812, “The Absentee” by Maria Edgeworth examines social injustice in 19th-century Britain. At that time, the management of many Irish estates suffered from the absenteeism of their Anglo-Irish landlords.
