Alcibiades I

Book cover
By: (c. 428 BC - c. 347 BC)

Alcibiades I by Plato is a thought-provoking dialogue that delves into the complexities of self-knowledge and virtue. The character of Alcibiades serves as a prime example of someone who believes he possesses wisdom and virtue, yet is ultimately ignorant of his true self and lacks genuine virtue. Through Socrates' probing questions and arguments, the reader is led to question their own understanding of themselves and their values.

Plato's writing is clear and engaging, making complex philosophical ideas accessible to the reader. The dialogue format allows for a dynamic exchange of ideas and perspectives, keeping the reader engaged and facilitating a deeper understanding of the concepts being discussed.

Overall, Alcibiades I is a fascinating exploration of self-knowledge and virtue that will leave readers contemplating their own beliefs and values long after they have finished reading. Plato's timeless wisdom and insight continue to resonate in the modern world, making this text a valuable read for anyone interested in philosophy and self-reflection.

Book Description:
As Jowett relates in his brilliant introduction, 95% of Plato's writing is certain and his reputation rests soundly on this foundation. The Alcibiades 1 appears to be a short work by Plato with only two characters: Socrates and Alcibiades. This dialogue has little dramatic verisimilitude but centres on the question of what knowledge one needs for political life. Like the early dialogues, the question is on whether the virtues needed by a statesman can be taught, on the importance of self-knowledge as a starting point for any leader. While this may be only partially the work of Plato, or even not his at all, Jowett favoured the work with his magisterial translation and appears to favour its inclusion in the canon of true works.
