Der Oberförster Hagedorn war von einer mehrtägigen Inspektionsfahrt durch Wälder, die er außeramtlich verwaltete, heimgekommen und hatte es sich in seinem Zimmer, dem eigentlichen Wohnzimmer der Familie bequem gemacht.

Über dem großen Rundtisch mit seiner grauen Marmorplatte brannte die Hängelampe, der altmodische Messing Teekessel summte, und der Kaffee, den Fräulein Perl, des Hauses getreue Hüterin, zu brühen begonnen hatte, duftete. Die Windstöße, die gegen die Holzläden dröhnten, der Regen, der klatschend auf die Fensterbleche fiel, und das Brausen der Waldbäume jenseits des Weges machten es drinnen noch behaglicher. Der Oberförster, seine Tochter Maggie und Fräulein Perl tranken ihren Kaffee in vollem Verständnis dieser Wohlgeborgenheit und störten nur hier und da durch ein Wort die gemütliche Stille.
