Non potendo operare altrimenti, ho creduto ricorrere all'opera della penna:

1.º Per ricordare all'Italia molti de' suoi valorosi, che lasciarono la vita sui campi di battaglia per essa. Alcuni son conosciuti, e forse i più cospicui, ma molti dormono ignorati, che non furono da meno dei primi. A ciò mi accinsi, come a dovere sacro.
