The Choise of Valentines Or the Merie Ballad of Nash His Dildo   By: (1567-1601)

Book cover

In "The Choice of Valentines Or the Merry Ballad of Nash His Dildo," Thomas Nash ventures into the realm of comedy, exploring themes of love, sexuality, and identity. This slim yet provocative work succeeds in captivating the reader's attention, blending ribald humor with witty commentary.

Nash's writing style is both poetic and raucous, serving as a reflection of his era's taste for bawdy tales. Through clever wordplay, risqué innuendos, and tongue-in-cheek dialogues, he pushes the boundaries of what could be discussed in public literature during the Elizabethan era. The author's skillful use of satire and euphemism adds depth and entertainment value to the narrative.

At its core, "The Choice of Valentines Or the Merry Ballad of Nash His Dildo" is a parody of the courtly love tradition. Nash cunningly subverts the genre by presenting a protagonist who, instead of serenading a lady fair, ventures on a quest to find the perfect dildo. By employing this unconventional approach, the author challenges societal norms and questions the rigidity and absurdity of traditional romance.

One cannot overlook the work's historical significance, as it sheds light on the sexual attitudes and interests prevalent in Elizabethan England. In a time when open discussions about human desire and pleasure were frowned upon, Nash fearlessly breaks barriers. Through a mix of wit, irony, and ribaldry, he presents a candid depiction of human sexuality, highlighting that these desires are an inherent facet of human nature.

Though relatively short, the book delivers a powerful and engaging narrative. Nash aptly captures the contradictions and complexities of human sexuality, challenging his readers to reflect on their own sexual liberation, agency, and societal expectations. By masterfully blending humor and thought-provoking content, he leaves a lasting impression on readers.

However, it is important to approach this work with an understanding of its historical context. "The Choice of Valentines Or the Merry Ballad of Nash His Dildo" may not be suitable for every reader due to its explicit content and forthright discussions of sexuality. While it bravely confronts societal taboos, it is essential to exercise caution and consider personal sensitivities before delving into its pages.

In conclusion, "The Choice of Valentines Or the Merry Ballad of Nash His Dildo" by Thomas Nash is an entertaining and daring piece of Elizabethan literature that pushes boundaries. With its irreverent humor and reflective commentary, it reveals a side of history often left untold. Its exploration of love, sex, and identity remains relevant even in the present day, igniting thoughtful discussions about societal expectations and individual liberation.

INTRODUCTION.

Nash's "CHOISE OF VALENTINES" has apparently come down to us only in manuscript form. It is extremely doubtful (Oldys notwithstanding[a]), whether the poem was ever before accorded the dignity of print. Nor would it now be deemed worthy of such were the only considerations those of literary merit or intrinsic value: truth to tell there is little of either to recommend it. But, as it has been repeatedly said, and well insisted on, the world cannot afford to lose any "document" whatsoever which bears, or may bear, in the slightest degree, on the story of its own growth and development, and out of which its true life has to be written...
