Christian Devotedness   By: (1795-1853)

Book cover

Christian Devotedness by Anthony Norris Groves is a deeply insightful and thought-provoking book that challenges readers to reassess their commitment to living a life of wholehearted devotion to Christ. Groves, a passionate Christian missionary in the 19th century, shares his personal experiences and reveals timeless principles that are as relevant today as they were when first penned.

The book is divided into several sections, each addressing a specific aspect of Christian devotedness. Groves opens by outlining the biblical foundation for devotedness and stresses the importance of surrendering all aspects of one's life to God. He emphasizes that true devotion requires a complete renunciation of self-centeredness, materialistic pursuits, and worldly ambitions, as well as a willingness to follow God's lead even in the face of hardships.

One of the standout features of Christian Devotedness is Groves' ability to dissect the practical implications of devotedness for various areas of life. From finances to relationships, he challenges readers to examine how their choices align with their professed commitment to Christ. Groves offers clear and convicting examples, making it difficult for readers to ignore the potential areas of compromise and lack of total devotion in their own lives.

The author's writing style, although rooted in an earlier era, remains surprisingly relevant. Groves' sincerity and passion for God shine through every page, making the book not just a theoretical treatise, but a compelling call to action. His anecdotes and examples, drawn from his own life and ministry, add a personal touch that helps readers connect with the material on a deeper level.

Furthermore, Christian Devotedness is refreshingly practical. Groves not only encourages a radical devotion to Christ but also provides practical guidance on how to live it out. He challenges readers to reevaluate their priorities, develop disciplined habits of prayer and Bible study, and actively seek opportunities to serve others. However, it is important to note that Groves' suggestions should be applied with discernment, as each person's journey of devotedness will look different.

While the book occasionally touches on controversial topics, such as the dangers of accumulating wealth, Groves approaches these subjects with humility and biblical integrity. He consistently points back to Scripture as the ultimate authority, allowing readers to come to their own conclusions and convictions.

In conclusion, Christian Devotedness is a timeless classic that encourages Christians to reexamine their commitment to Christ and embrace a life of radical devotion. Groves' powerful insights, combined with practical guidance, make this book a valuable resource for anyone seeking to live a life of deeper faith. Whether you are a new believer or a seasoned Christian, this spiritual treasure will challenge and inspire you to take your walk with Christ to new heights.

CHRISTIAN DEVOTEDNESS, or The Consideration of Our Saviour's Precept, "Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth".

By Anthony Norris Groves (1795 1853).

Second Edition,

London, James Nisbet, Berners Street, MDCCCXXIX.

Before this second edition was issued Groves had taken the step which he here had advocated. The tract is a revelation of the man, and affords an insight into the spirit and the glow which made his ministry attractive to sincere souls, and effectual. It being long since unobtainable we give it in full. By it he, being dead, may yet speak, and other hearts be enlarged and enriched, to the glory of God. It reads:

PREFACE

In sending a second impression of the following little work into the world after a lapse of four years from the publication of the former edition, it may be right to state, that my views on the subject of it, have undergone no change in the way of relinquishment; but on the contrary the experience of every day in my own history, every observation I have been able to make on the history of those with whom I have come into the closest contact, and who have either received or rejected the view, and in whatever degree, has tended exceedingly to strengthen the conviction on my mind, of the infinitely deep knowledge of the human heart, and springs of human actions which these injunctions of our Blessed Lord manifest: and that he means simply what he says in "Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth," etc...
