Book cover
By: (1835-1910)

In "Christian Science," Mark Twain provides a critical and satirical examination of the belief system developed by Mary Baker Eddy. Through his biting wit and insightful analysis, Twain sheds light on the inconsistencies and potential dangers of Christian Science. He challenges readers to question their own beliefs and the implications of blindly following a religious doctrine. Despite its controversial subject matter, Twain's writing is compelling and thought-provoking, making this book a must-read for anyone interested in the intersection of religion and society.

Book Description:
Christian Science is a 1907 collection of essays Mark Twain wrote about Christian Science, beginning with an article that was published in Cosmopolitan in 1899. Although Twain was interested in mental healing and the ideas behind Christian Science, he was hostile towards its founder, Mary Baker Eddy . He called her, according to American writer Caroline Fraser, "[g]rasping, sordid, penurious, famishing for everything she sees—money, power, glory—vain, untruthful, jealous, despotic, arrogant, insolent, pitiless where thinkers and hypnotists are concerned, illiterate, shallow, incapable of reasoning outside of commercial lines, immeasurably selfish." - Summary by Wikipedia, edited by John Greenman
