Questo libro non è per gli strategici e molto meno pei letterati; un cruscante, leggendolo, avrebbe di che arricciare il naso moltissime volte; un soldato di quelli che vanno per la maggiore, giurerebbe che lo scrivente sa di arte di guerra, quanto sa d'ortografia un'analfabeta; nè io dicerto vorrei sfegatarmi per far cambiar loro opinione; io non l'ho mai pretesa a linguista ed ho una vecchia ruggine con chi si arrovella, per studiare il sistema di ammazzare più gente che può.

I miei non sono che appunti; appunti presi al chiaro di luna, nel silenzio degli avamposti o nel cicaleggio giocondo e spigliato della caserma; tra il fischiar delle palle e le canzoni entusiastiche, tra una bestemmia e una lacrima, in mezzo alla baldoria e ai cadaveri, ai generosi proponimenti e alle continue disillusioni, nasce spontanea in chiunque abbia del cuore, una filosofia che l'arcigno e pettoruto pedante non crederebbe possibile in una vita scapigliata, chiassona, piena d'emozioni, ma sempre senza pensieri, quale è la vita del campo...
