Elk land heeft een eigen karakter, dat is onbetwistbaar. Holland nu is, zoowel om den aard van zijn grondgebied als om de kleeding zijner boeren, tegenwoordig het schilderachtigste land van Europa.

Het is de moeite waard, zich op te maken om met eigen oogen te aanschouwen die pijpjesrookers en kermisdansers, die langzame schuiten en reusachtige bruggen, die zwaaiende molenarmen en kalme overpeinzingen van rustige burgers over hun glas bier, die boerin met breede heupen, de producten der eigen boerderij naar de stad brengend, die spannen van trekhonden, die eeuwige kanalen, bevolkt met eenden, die nette dorpen en aardige huisjes, die zonderlinge visschers, grillige luchten, moerassige vlakten. Men kan dan op zijn gemak, zonder de oogen dicht te doen, vóór zich zien verschijnen de landschappen door Ruysdael's penseel op het doek gebracht, en de tronies der bierdrinkers die Teniers teekende.

Naar Holland gaan beteekent trouwens zooveel niet.... Men stapt 's morgens aan 't Noorderstation in een exprestrein, en 's avonds zit men kalmpjes in een "koffiehuis" te midden van de diepe rust der weiden en de tonen van een klokkenspel... Continue reading book >>
