De ramp van Valparaiso ligt ieder nog versch in het geheugen. Men herinnert zich, dat in de maand Augustus van het vorige jaar het groote entrepĂ´t van het Z. Amerikaansche halfrond, dat aan de kust van den Stillen Oceaan dezelfde rol vervulde als Rio de Janeiro of Buenos Ayres aan den Oostenlijken oever, door vulkanische schokken hevig geteisterd is.

Huizen zijn tot puinhoopen geworden; vreeselijke branden, die overal tegelijk losbarstten, hebben het vernielingswerk voltooid, duizenden menschen zijn omgekomen, honderden millioenen guldens verloren gegaan.

De geografische ligging van Valparaiso was zoo gunstig, dat in honderd jaren, ten gevolge, wel is waar, van hare herhaalde en volhardende pogingen om kapitalen en landverhuizers tot zich te trekken, de bevolking der stad van 6000 tot 150.000 zielen was gestegen. Geene haven van Chili, van de geheele westkust van Z. Amerika kon zich met haar meten. Noch Guayaquil, noch Valdivia, noch Punta Arenas, noch Concepcion hadden zulke uitgebreide handelsbetrekkingen. Zij was trotsch op hare honderden millioenen aankomende en vertrekkende schepen, op hare stoomvaartlijnen, op hare weergalooze dokken, hare fabrieken en vooral hare bankinstellingen. Het was een tweede Marseilles of Hamburg in een staat, waarvan de toekomst met zekerheid scheen te kunnen worden voorspeld en die op het gebied der nijverheid voor geen anderen in het Australische halfrond onderdeed...
