Book cover

In "The Defects of the Negro Church," author Orishatukeh Faduma thoughtfully delves into a complex and critical analysis of the American Negro Church. As part of the Occasional Papers series published by The American Negro Academy, this thought-provoking work challenges traditional perceptions and unveils the imperfections that exist within this significant institution.

Throughout the book, Faduma presents a meticulous examination of the defects and shortcomings of the Negro Church, highlighting its limited impact on the social, political, and economic progress of African Americans. Drawing from historical evidence and personal experiences, the author elucidates the factors that contribute to the perceived stagnancy within the Church, urging readers to reflect on these issues with an open mind.

One of the key strengths of Faduma's work lies in his balanced approach. While he acknowledges and respects the historical importance of the Negro Church in fostering community bonds and providing spiritual support, he does not shy away from critiquing its inadequacies. Faduma deftly explores topics such as the lack of intellectual training and limited cultural and social influence within the Church, making a compelling case for the need for reform and progress.

Moreover, Faduma's critique extends beyond the Church itself, delving into the broader socio-political factors that have contributed to its deficiencies. He illustrates how slavery, institutional racism, and the consequent socio-economic disparities have influenced the Church's development, inhibiting its ability to create lasting change and empowerment for African Americans.

However, this work is not without its limitations. Some readers may find Faduma's arguments and conclusions, at times, excessively critical of the Negro Church. Though he presents valid points, his analysis could benefit from a more extensive examination of the Church's positive contributions and efforts towards uplifting the African American community.

In summary, "The Defects of the Negro Church" is a thought-provoking and well-researched exploration of the shortcomings that hinder the progress of the American Negro Church. Faduma's rigorous analysis, combined with his personal insights, provides readers with valuable perspectives on the need for reform within this institution. Despite its limited scope, this book serves as a catalyst for important conversations regarding the role of the Negro Church and its potential for positive change.

The Defects of the Negro Church.

The writer does not undertake to point out all the defects of the Negro church. He does not lay any claim to omniscience.

The limits of time and the scope of the subject prevent him from discussing even what he knows in part. It is only some of the leading defects in the Negro Church which will be presented for discussion. It may be necessary to state at the onset that the writer is an optimist in his studies of questions relating to his race. If at any time he is compelled to use the surgeon's knife he will do so with the utmost sympathy and with a view to heal. It may also be necessary to state, in order to allay the fears of our friends and prevent the reckless criticism of our detractors, that the defects of the Negro church are found more or less in churches of other races. They are the same in kind but differ in degree, on account of difference in environment. They are not inherent in the race, but are found wherever the environments call for them. It may be laid down as an axiomatic truth that there has never been and there is not a perfect church... Continue reading book >>
