DIE Drachenköpfe unserer Boote bogen um das gelbe Segel. Die Parade vollzog sich in elegantem Rauschen, wir wollten mit Ostwind an das andere Ende, bei Ostwind anderthalb Stunden dachten wir, es waren dreißig Kilometer. Die Flottille lag in einer Linie. Die Ruder sangen dumpf verknattert. Dann schäumte das Wasser los, und die Segel beugten sich alle.

Wir fuhren in gleicher Lage steil in die graue Wüste hinein. Das durchpflügte Wasser riß in nie absterbender Welle einen silbernen Bogen über den Lee. Die Bäuche der Segel neigten sich tiefer und streiften das farblose Wasser und hoben sich wieder aufgetaucht in rote Sonne. Die Luvseiten wälzten sich mit heller gestrichenen Leibern weit aus dem See, und der silberne Sprenkel der mitlaufenden ewigen Welle umstäubte uns von der anderen mit wildem Geflock.

Alle Flaggen am Mast lohten schmal gezüngelt in das Blau.
