Große, kleine Städte!

Wir sind in einer mittleren Stadt von kaum zwanzigtausend Einwohnern, immer noch winzig genug, daß alles, was nicht diente, hämmerte oder ackerte, eine große Familie bildete, in der man sich kannte und sich miteinander befaßte.

Und doch trennte sich die gebildete Gesellschaft in verschiedene Klassen: und wie stets und überall hielt die eine sich aus besserem Teig gebacken als die andere.

Als der Krieg von 1866 beendet war, empfing die nunmehr preußische Stadt eine Garnison; es wurden, neben Infanterie, einige Schwadronen Husaren nach C. verlegt. Aber die Offiziersfamilien sonderten sich, zumal da sie noch Fremdlinge waren, gänzlich ab, und nur zu den höheren Beamten und dem Adel nahmen sie diejenige Fühlung, welche ihnen gleichsam vorgeschrieben war. Im übrigen konnte die Bürgerschaft mit der stehenden Einquartierung wohl zufrieden sein, denn unter den Husaren befanden sich wohlhabende, sogar reiche Leute, welche das Geld nicht in die Schublade versteckten.

Die neuen Verhältnisse waren dem Städtchen günstig. Der Geschäftsgeist regte sich, und besonders die Bautätigkeit erwachte. Die Bürger verdienten Geld und fanden sich rascher in die neuen Dinge, als man erwartet hatte... Continue reading book >>
