Una nit del mes de setembre de 1828, el digne i respectable llibrer Furbach, del carrer de Neuhauser, a Munic, es despertà tot estranyat de sentir caminar a la golfa de damunt la seva cambra: algú anava i venia i es lamentava. Un dels espiralls de la golfa s'obrí, i llargs sospirs foren exhalats en el silenci.

En aquell moment, a la capella dels jesuïtes va sonar la una, i sota la cambra del senyor Furbach els cavalls daven peuades a l'estable.

La golfa era ocupada pel cotxer Nicklausse, un minyonàs del Pitcherland sec, nerviós, molt destre a menar els cavalls, que fins i tot havia fet alguns estudis al seminari de Marienthal, però d'una ànima senzilla i supersticiosa; duia sota la camisa una creueta de bronze, i la besava de nit i de dia, baldament ell hagués passat dels trenta anys.

El senyor Furbach parà l'orella. Al cap d'alguns segons l'espirall tornà a tancar se, les passes van cessar, el llit del cotxer va cruixir i al capdavall tot va callar.

Vaja va dir se el vell llibrer avui és lluna plena: Nicklausse es tusta el pit: gemega pels seus pecats, el pobre diable!
