Comenzaba á clarear el día cuando despertó el doctor Aresti, sintiéndose empujado en un hombro. Lo primero que vió fué el rostro de manzana seca, verdoso y arrugado de Kataliñ, su ama de llaves, y los dos cuernos del pañuelo que llevaba la vieja arrollado á las sienes.

Don Luis... despierte. Muerto hay en el camino de Ortuella. El jues que vaya.

Comenzó á vestirse el doctor, después de largos desperezos y una rebusca lenta de sus ropas, entre los libros y revistas que, desbordándose de los estantes de la inmediata habitación, se extendían por su dormitorio de hombre solo.

Dos médicos tenía á sus órdenes en el hospital de Gallarta, pero aquel día estaban ausentes: el uno en Bilbao con licencia; el otro en Galdames desde la noche anterior, para curar á varios mineros heridos por una explosión de dinamita.

Kataliñ le ayudó á ponerse el recio gabán, y abrió la puerta de la calle mientras el doctor se calaba la boina y requería su cachaba , grueso cayado con contera de lanza, que le acompañaba siempre en sus visitas á las minas.

Oye, Kataliñ dijo al trasponer la puerta. ¿Sabes quién es el muerto?
