Horridas sombras, horridos vapores, Que enlutais estes ares carregados Por onde vão fogindo os meus clamores;

Sinistras Aves, que funestos brados Espalhais de Cyprestes luctuosos, Pela negra Tristeza bafejados;

A vós consagro os prantos dolorosos, Que meus olhos derramão contra a dura, Antiga ley dos Fados poderosos;

Antiga ley, que á feia sepultura Arroja sem respeito, e sem piedade A Virtude, a Grandeza, a Formosura!

Aspera ley, que a pobre Humanidade N'um momento, n'um átomo arremessa Ao centro da medonha Eternidade!

Tremendissima ley, que tão depressa Troca em ais, e desgostos a alegria; Troca a Purpura em luto, o solio em Eça.

Ah! Nunca amanhecera o cruel dia, Esse dia fatal, que tu seguiste, Noite de espanto, noite de agonia.

Téjo, que foste da Tragédia triste O Theatro infeliz, que he do Thesoiro, Que a meus olhos saudosos encobriste?
