För mer än hundra år sedan blef en bonde ägare till herresätet Ryd. Denne Nils Troelsson skall ha varit en dugande man. Han hade vid unga år äktat en torparedotter från Finnbygden och som följd af sitt missgifte råkat i delo med sin släkt, därför kom han att odla utsocknes jord; men han hade lyckan med sig, hans kvinna födde honom åtta barn, och med hårdt arbete och klok förtänksamhet grundlade han välstånd åt dem alla.

Äldste sonen Troels löste till sig gården och tog fatt där fadern slutat. Moar och hult blefvo till åkrar under hans händer, stenar till bröd, trä till guld. Han tog namn efter sin mors hembygd, kallade sig patron Finne till Ryd och var en verklig herreman, med stort anseende för rikedom och gudsfruktan.

Vid fyllda fyrtio år gifte han sig med en stiftsjungfru, hvars blåa och frusna blod han icke synes ha varit man till att tina. Hon gaf sitt ja ord i hastigt mod och följde honom till altaret på trots mot sin böjelse för en friherre, som icke haft mod att binda sig vid henne, då hon var fattig, fast han senare icke saknade mod att kränka henne med en bekännelse om sin kärlek.
