Book cover

The Entailed Hat Or, Patty Cannon's Times by George Alfred Townsend is a remarkable historical novel that delves into the dark and chilling world of the mid-19th century slave trade along the eastern shores of the United States. This gripping tale takes the reader on a journey through the haunting landscapes of Delaware and Maryland, where the notorious slave trader Patty Cannon operated, leaving a trail of heartbreak and despair in her wake.

Townsend's writing is skillful and evocative, effortlessly transporting the reader back in time to experience the unsettling events that unfolded during this tumultuous period. Through vivid descriptions and meticulous attention to detail, the author recreates the atmosphere of the era, making it easy for the reader to immerse themselves in the story.

At the heart of the narrative is the enigmatic character of Patty Cannon, a woman shrouded in mystery and infamy. Townsend's portrayal of Cannon is multifaceted, exploring the intricacies of her personality, as well as the complexities of her motivations. While her actions are undoubtedly reprehensible, the author manages to infuse her character with a certain depth, forcing the reader to confront the disturbing reality that even the most villainous individuals possess some semblance of humanity.

The novel also introduces a plethora of other engaging characters, each grappling with their own internal struggles and motivations. From the abolitionists fighting for the freedom of enslaved people to the slaves themselves, Townsend weaves a rich tapestry of individuals who find themselves embroiled in the treacherous web spun by Patty Cannon.

One aspect of The Entailed Hat Or, Patty Cannon's Times that stands out is Townsend's meticulous research. It is evident that the author spent a great deal of time and effort delving into historical archives and testimonies to ensure authenticity throughout the book. This attention to detail lends credibility to the narrative, making it even more compelling for history enthusiasts.

However, the novel does have its shortcomings. At times, the pacing slows down, particularly during sections focused on background information or historical context. While this is understandable given the weighty subject matter, it may deter readers seeking a faster-paced narrative.

Despite these minor flaws, The Entailed Hat Or, Patty Cannon's Times is a thought-provoking and educational novel that sheds light on a dark chapter in American history. Townsend's ability to evoke such strong emotions through his writing is a testament to his skill as a storyteller. By exploring the depths of human depravity and resilience in the face of adversity, this book serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of cherishing and fighting for freedom and justice.

INTRODUCTION.

Once the author awoke to a painful reflection that he knew no place well, though his occupation had taken him to many, and that, after twenty five years of describing localities and society, he would be identified with none.

"Where shall I begin to rove within confines?" he asked, feeling the vacant spaces in his nature: the want of all those birds, forest trees, household habits, weeds, instincts of the brooks, and tints and tones of the local species which lie in some neighborhood's compass, and complete the pastoral mind.

Numerous districts rose up and contended together, each attractive from some striking scene, or bold contrast, or lovely face; and wiser policy might have led his inclinations to one of these, redundant, perhaps, in wealth or literary appreciation; yet the heart began to turn, as in first love, or vagrancy almost as sweet, to the little, lowly region where his short childhood was lived, and where the unknown generations of his people darkened the sand the peninsula between the Chesapeake and the Delaware...
