Nähdessään nimen »Genoveeva» vilahtaa varmaankin monen mielessä hymynsekainen kummastus siitä, mitä varten on uudelleen suomennettu ja painettu tämä ikivanha kertomus, joka on sisällykseltään ja kertomatavaltaan niin kaukana kaikesta nykyaikaisesta kirjallisuudesta. Siihen on kuitenkin monta syytä. Ensiksikin se on naivisuudessaan ja pyhimystarumaisessa hurskaudessaan nykyajalle niin uutta, että sitä vaipuu lukemaan jonkinmoinen hämmästelevä uteliaisuus mielessään; toiseksi sen lukeminen tarjoaa tuulahduksen niiltä ajoilta, jolloin ihmismieli ei ollut vielä niin epäilyksien ja ristiriitojen raastama kuin nyt, vaan jolloin se eli naivin lapsuususkon aikaa; kolmanneksi on tämä kirjanen ollut jo ammoin kansamme mielilukemista, josta se nähtävästi sai hengelleen tyydytystä.
