Olá che rumore, olá che strepito è questo? Egli è possibil pure che fra persone di valore e di sangue illustre ci abbia a venir mischiata sempre questa vilissima canaglia? la qual per mostrar a quel popolazzo che gli sta d'intorno, che s'intende di comedie, or rugna di qua, or torce il muso di lá. Par che le puzzi ogni cosa: Questa parola non è boccaccevole, questo si potea dir meglio altrimente, questo è fuor delle regole di Aristotele, quel non ha del verisimile; pascendosi di quella aura vilissima popolare, né intende che si dica, e alla fine viene a credere agli altri. E altri pieni d'invidia e di veleno, per mostrar che la comedia non dia sodisfazione agli intendenti e che l'hanno in fastidio, empiono di strepito e di gridi tutto il teatro. E che genti son queste poi? qualche legista senza legge e qualche poeta senza versi.

Credete, ignorantoni, con queste vostre chiacchiere far parere un'opera di manco ch'ella sia, come il mondo dal vostro bestial giudicio graduasse gli onori dell'opere? O goffi che sète! ché l'opre son giudicate dall'applauso universal de' dotti di tutte le nazioni: perché si veggono stampate per tutte le parti del mondo, e tradotte in latino, francese, spagnolo e altre varie lingue; e quanto piú s'odono e si leggono tanto piú piacciono e son ristampate, come è accaduto a tutte l'altre buone sue sorelle che in publico e in privato comparse sono...
