Hærmændene på Helgeland , som oprindelig var paabegyndt paa vers, forelaa færdig som manuskript og blev indlevert til Kristiania teater høsten 1857, men blev henlagt. Om den strid som førtes i den anledning, se Collin: Bjørnson II 431 fg. Stykket blev imidlertid trykt som bilag til Illustreret Nyhedsblad april 1858 det opførtes første gang november s.a. Om dramaets historie gir Ibsen endel oplysninger i sidste halvpart av indledningen til anden utgave av Gildet paa Solhaug. I forordet til den tyske utgave (1876) uttaler Ibsen, at stoffet til dramaet bare delvis er hentet fra volsungasagaen; det væsentlige grundlag utgjøres av ættesagaerne, hvor heltesagnets forhold ofte bare synes ført tilbake til menneskelige dimensioner. Av volsungasaga kommer kap. 20 31 i betragtning. Særlig i kap. 28 29 (kfr. III akt) fandt Ibsen et enkelt, betydelig motiv, som har fengslet ham.
