Viimeisen edellinen kellonsoitto helähti suuren, ulkomaille lähtevän laivan kannelta. Ihmiset liikahtivat laiturilla ja hätäisimmät rupesivat jo jättämään hyvästiä toisillensa.

Väkeä oli paljon, sekä lähteviä että erittäin niiden saattajia.

Ja näistä viimeisistä herätti suurinta huomiota joukko ylioppilaita ja silinteripäisiä nuoria herroja, jotka saattoivat ulkomaille lähtevää toveriansa. He olivat tulleet suuressa joukossa, niinkuin tehdään mielenosoitusta varten, olivat asettuneet yhteen kokoon, melusivat, nauroivat ja puhuivat yhtaikaa, toinen toistaan kovemmin. He hyvin tiesivät olevansa pääasia koko laiturilla, eivätkä sentähden ollenkaan välittäneet siitä, että ihmiset katselivat heihin suu auki. He eivät olleet pääasia ainoastansa täällä laiturilla, vaan olivat tätä nykyä koko maassa. Heitä katsottiin joka paikassa samalla uteliaisuudella ja osanotolla. Sillä heillä oli niin he sanoivat uuden ajan avaimet käsissään, uudet aatteet ja uudet tehtävät.

Ei kukaan huomannutkaan heidän rinnallaan muita lähtijöitä laiturilla.

Mutta jos tarkasteli, niin olisi siellä ihmistulvassa kyllä nähnyt paljon semmoista, mikä tavallisissa oloissa olisi ihan ensimmäisenä huomiota puoleensa vetänyt... Continue reading book >>
