Irene Iddesleigh

Book cover
By: (1860-1939)

I recently finished reading Irene Iddesleigh by Amanda McKittrick Ros, and I have to say that it was a truly unique and quirky novel. The language used in the book is incredibly ornate and flowery, almost to the point of being comical. The characters are melodramatic and over-the-top, making for a rather entertaining read.

The story itself follows the life of Irene Iddesleigh, a young woman who faces various hardships and challenges throughout her life. While the plot may be a bit melodramatic and improbable at times, it certainly kept me engaged and curious to see how things would unfold.

Overall, Irene Iddesleigh is a delightful and eccentric read that is sure to appeal to those who enjoy classic literature. Amanda McKittrick Ros's writing style is truly one-of-a-kind, and her storytelling is both entertaining and engaging. If you're looking for a read that is a bit out of the ordinary, I would recommend giving Irene Iddesleigh a try.

Book Description:
Amanda McKittrick Ros, a Northern Irish writer, did for the novel what William McGonagall did for poetry and Florence Foster Jenkins for the coloratura voice. She published a number of novels (all at her own expense) and in addition to being a novelist was a poet, her best known being 'Visiting Westminster Abbey' which begins
Holy Moses!
Take a look!
Flesh decayed in every nook!
Some rare bits of brain lie here,
Mortal loads of beef and beer.

C.S. Lewis, J.R. Tolkien and The Inklings were admirers and held competitions to see who could read her work for the longest time whist keeping a straight face. Sadly, all her books are now out of print but command high prices on the rare books market.

Irene Iddesleigh, her first book, is a romantic novel, telling the common story of an unhappy, doomed marriage. The prose style, however, is unique.
