Book cover

John Redmond's Last Years by Stephen Lucius Gwynn is an engaging and insightful exploration of the final years in the life of an influential Irish politician. Gwynn skillfully weaves together historical facts and personal anecdotes to create a compelling narrative that sheds new light on the life and times of John Redmond.

One of the book's main strengths is Gwynn's ability to analyze Redmond's political career within the context of the turbulent period in Irish history. He provides a comprehensive overview of Redmond's role as the leader of the Irish Parliamentary Party and his tireless efforts to achieve Home Rule for Ireland. Gwynn also delves into the complex relationships Redmond had with key figures of his time, such as Charles Stewart Parnell and Winston Churchill, offering fascinating insights into the intricate web of politics during this era.

Gwynn's research is evident throughout the book, as he presents a rich tapestry of primary sources, letters, and speeches that capture Redmond's intellectual depth and charisma. By drawing on these sources, Gwynn successfully portrays Redmond as a figure who possessed both brilliant political acumen and a genuine desire for justice for the Irish people.

Moreover, Gwynn's writing style is remarkably fluid and accessible, making this biography an enjoyable read for both history enthusiasts and casual readers alike. His prose is informative yet engaging, complemented by vivid descriptions that transport the reader to the political arenas and gatherings of Redmond's time.

The only minor drawback is that Gwynn's admiration for Redmond occasionally overrides his objectivity. While the author admirably highlights Redmond's accomplishments, there are moments when a more critical perspective would have provided a more balanced portrayal. Nevertheless, this does not significantly detract from the overall quality of the book.

In conclusion, John Redmond's Last Years is a meticulously researched and captivating biography that offers a comprehensive understanding of an influential politician's final years. Gwynn's vivid storytelling and in-depth analysis make this book a valuable addition to any lover of Irish history or political biographies.

PREFACE

In writing this book, I have had access to my late leader's papers for the period beginning with the war. These were placed at my disposal by his son, Major William Archer Redmond, D.S.O., M.P. No condition having been imposed upon me, it seemed best, for many reasons, that it should be written, as it has been written, without consultation.

A writer in whom such a trust has been placed may well be at a loss how to express his gratitude, but can never convey the measure of his anxiety. From those who cherish Redmond's memory, and especially from those who were nearest to him in comradeship and affection, I must only crave the indulgence which should be accorded to sincere effort. Differences of interpretation there will be in any review of past events, and others can claim with justice that on many points they were better situated for full understanding than was I. Yet for the period which is specially studied, if there is failure in comprehension it cannot be excused by lack of opportunity to be thoroughly informed... Continue reading book >>
