Quan Zacaries Kobus, jutge de pau a Huneburg, finà en 1832, Fritz Kobus, son fill, veient se al cap d'una bella casa de la plaça de les Acàcies, d'una bona hisenda a la vall de Meisenthal i d'un bé de Déu d'escuts col·locats en sòlides hipoteques, eixugà les seves llàgrimes, i es digué amb l'Eclesiastès: Vanitat de vanitats! tot és vanitat! ¿Quin aventatge donen als homes llurs treballs damunt la terra? L'una generació passa i l'altra ve: el sol s'aixeca i es pon avui com ahir; el vent bufa a tramuntana, i després bufa a migjorn; els rius van a la mar, i la mar no se n'emplena; totes les coses treballen més que l'home no arribarà a dir; l'ull no és mai saciat de veure ni l'orella d'oir; hom oblida les coses passades, hom oblidarà les que vindran; la millor cosa és el vagar... per no haver de fer se cap retret.
