L'attention des archéologues qui ont visité l'Égypte a été si fortement attirée par les temples et par les tombeaux que nul d'entre eux ne s'est attaché à relever avec soin ce qui reste des habitations privées et des constructions militaires. Peu de pays pourtant ont conservé autant de débris de leur architecture civile. Sans parler des villes d'époque romaine ou byzantine, qui survivent presque intactes à Kouft, à Kom Ombo, à El Agandiyéh, une moitié an moins de la Thèbes antique subsiste à l'est et an sud de Karnak. L'emplacement de Memphis est semé de buttes qui atteignent 15 et 20 mètres de hauteur, et dont le noyau est formé par des maisons en bon état. A Tell el Maskhoutah, les greniers de Pithom sont encore debout; à Sân, à Tell Basta, la cité saïte et ptolémaïque renferme des quartiers dont on pourrait lever le plan. Je ne parle ici que des plus connues; mais combien de localités échappent à la curiosité des voyageurs, où l'on rencontre des ruines d'habitations privées remontant à l'époque des Ramessides, et plus haut peut être! Quant aux forteresses, le seul village d'Abydos n'en a t il pas deux, dont une est au moins contemporaine de la VIe dynastie? Les remparts d'El Kab, de Kom el Ahmar, d'El Hibèh, de Dakkèh, même une partie de ceux de Thèbes, sont debout et attendent l'architecte qui daignera les étudier sérieusement...
