La servo subito.

Questo era il breve dialogo che ricorreva ogni sera, intorno alle dieci, e da anni parecchi, tra il signor Commendatore e la sua governante; quegli dalla sua camera da letto, dove stava terminando di leggere i giornali, questa da una saletta vicina, dove stava aspettando i cenni del padrone.

Per solito, quando scoccavano le dieci al pendolo dell'anticamera, il signor Commendatore avea finito, o stava per finire, il suo pasto intellettuale; e in questo caso, studiava il passo, si fermava un po' meno in Russia, o in Baviera, o in Costantinopoli, o al Cairo, e volgeva a grandi giornate verso le beate regioni dove fiorisce spontanea la carota recentissima e dove s'adagia la firma del gerente all'ombra d'un telegramma apocrifo. Intanto, dimandava il suo tè, altro sonnifero schietto. La signora Zita si alzava allora dal suo seggiolone, su cui stava biascicando una terza parte di rosario, tanto per mettersi un po' di bene alla cassa di risparmio de' cieli; andava pel bricco dell'acqua calda in cucina; la versava nel vaso d'argento, su d'un pugnello di foglie della preziosa pianta cinese, e, portato il vassoio con tutti gli annessi e connessi, lo deponeva sul tavolino, mentre il padrone aveva già avuto il tempo di dare un'occhiata, ai miracoli della tintura americana, ed anche alla notizia del capitano Franklin, morto di fame coi suoi vent'otto compagni, vicino a molti sacchi di cioccolatta, certo per mancanza di frullo...
