Pikku Jaakolle oli tulossa hauska joulu. Hänellä oli äidille joululahja. Arvokas lahja, joka oli riemastuttava äidin.

Se oli pantu puodissa sievään paperilaatikkoon niin että jo ulkoapäin näytti lahja arvokkaalle. Mitä oli sisaren lahjat tämän suhteen? Kaikki yhteensäkin? Ilmanaikojaan vain!

Hän oli nähnyt kaikki heidän lahjansa, joita heillä oli vanhemmilleen ja toisilleen. Tytöt olivat näytelleet ne moneenkin kertaan. Vaan hänen lahjaansa eivät tytöt tienneet! Hän oli päättänyt ettei näytä eikä virka mitään, on aivan niin kuin hänellä ei mitään lahjaa kenellekään olisikaan, että sitten kaikki oikein hämmästyvät, kun laatikko lentää ovesta.

Hän piirusti laatikon kanteen: ÄIDILLE. Mutta kun hän tapasi säilöistään kirjoituksineen ja postimerkkeineen vanhan kirjekuoren, minkä joskus oli kadulta löytänyt, hän kiinnitti sen laatikon kanteen. Mainiota! Nyt eivät tiedä suuntiakaan keneltä lahja on.
