I.

Sutera, 4 aprile 1860.

«La congiura è scoperta, m'è dunque forza fuggire. Ma lascio la mia Sutera non per viltà, non per codarda e vigliacca paura; ritornerò in giorni migliori, e allora grideremo a viso scoperto: Viva Italia! Frattanto ti lego la salute di questo borgo; non faccio di esso un Vigliena, eppure so di poter dire che molti patrioti l'onorano. Distruggi le cifre e segreto.»

Questa lettera scriveva nella sera di quel dì Pardo di Sutera a Bino di Mussomeli, e il giovane Fuoco a mezzanotte la recava. Pardo accompagnollo sino al ponte sul Platani e là accommiatandolo gli disse:

Ricordati, o Fuoco, del povero esule. Domattina avrò lasciata la valle, ma ora, e sempre, sta saldo alla fede giurata. Più presto che tu non pensi mi rivedrai.

Addio dunque, mio Pardo: ora e sempre sarò congiurato.

Addio!

E mentre Fuoco scompariva entro la bruna callaia del monte, Pardo ritornava a passi veloci a Sutera.
